D - Mannose

Description: D - MannoseCystitis is a condition which is suffered by millions of people all over the world. It is a Urinary Tract Infection ’UTI‘, which is much more common in women; it will affect up to 50% of them, throughout the course of their life, although a small percentage of men will also suffer.

90% of the time Cystitis is a bacterial infection, caused by the bacteria E. coli. The cell walls of E. Coli are covered in tiny finger-like projections, the tips of which are an amino-sugar complex, known as a ’glycoprotein‘ but also referred to as a ’lectin‘. E. Coli lectins have the capacity of sticking the bacteria to the inside walls of our bladders and urinary tracts so they can‘t be rinsed out by urination. When bacterium cannot be eradicated my urination then it is common for a UTI, like cystitis to occur.

Some people with UTI have no symptoms and are completely unaware of their infection. However, it is far more common to have at least some symptoms. The most common symptoms of UTI include:
-A frequent urge to urinate
-Trickling of urine, despite a strong urge to urinate
-A painful, burning feeling in the area of the bladder or urethra during urination or even when not urinating
-An uncomfortable pressure above the pubic bone (in women) or a fullness in the rectum (in men)
-Cloudy, milky or reddish urine

D-Mannose is a naturally occurring sugar molecule that is found in relatively large quantities in fruit such as peaches, apples, oranges and certain berries like cranberries and blueberries. Extracted in the form of D-Mannose, a white crystal sugar similar to glucose, it can be easily dissolved in a liquid and swallowed.

D-Mannose acts to prevent the E.Coli bacterium from nesting inside the bladder and urinary tract by passing sugar into the blood stream which in turn gets passed onto the kidneys and into the urine. The sugar coated urine coats any free floating E.Coli as it passes out of the body preventing E.Coli from sticking to the inner tissues anymore and causing infection. The small amount of D-Mannose not excreted is harmless, and is completely safe for people with diabetes. This sugar is also not processed into fat and individuals should not be worried about weight gain.

Antibiotics kill unwanted micro-organisms, but also kill many friendly bacteria. Many women are familiar with yeast infections that follow antibiotic use, as the friendly bacteria are killed off along with the bad bacteria allowing the antibiotic-insensitive yeast to grow out of control. Antibiotics also deplete the body of many vitamins and minerals. In contrast, D-Mannose doesn‘t kill bacteria of any kind. D-Mannose simply helps to relocate misplaced E. Coli from inside of our urinary tracts to outside the body. (Since D-Mannose is absorbed in the upper small intestine, it doesn‘t relocate the friendly E. Coli normally present in the colon). D-Mannose treatment of E. Coli bladder and urinary tract infections is ecologically sound and effective treatment.

SUGGESTED USE
- Ongoing infections in children: ½ to 1 teaspoonful dissolved in a glass of water or juice every 2 to 3 hours.
- Adults: 1 teaspoonful dissolved in water or juice every 2 to 3 hours.
- Preventing Infections Start with the quantities noted above, but adjust the amounts downward if possible.
- Preventing “honeymoon cystitis": 1 teaspoonful one hour prior to intercourse & 1 cystitis” teaspoonful immediately afterwards.

- Travel cystitis: D-Mannose is an ideal travelling companion for people who suffer recurrent problems, especially when travelling.

If a UTI treated with D-Mannose does not show significant improvement within 24 hours (about 10% of cases), it is likely that the causative organism is not the E. Coli bacteria and a visit to the doctor for a conventional antibiotic drug is therefore necessary.
