Travel Money Advice

When we travel we often take a more cavalier approach and do not consider all of the dangers; some of us will carry large amounts of money around with us when we would not do so at home! In areas which have high tourism there is often also a high amount of pick pockets or common thieves who are often on the look out for tourists who they believe will have large amounts of cash or other valuables on them.

One of the main ways to protect yourself is to carry a credit cards and only small amounts of cash. Most places in the world these days will accept some form of card, be it switch, Mastero, Visa or American Express, a tourist guide for the area will be able to furnish you with the information of the favoured card! You should consider taking two cards; leave one in the hotel safe or in another safe place and only carry one around with you, if you do lose a card you will always have a replacement. Make sure that you have a note of any of the card numbers and a phone number so that you can report any stolen or lost card.

Travellers cheques are also a great way of protecting yourself. They prevent you from having to carry large amounts of cash around with you and can be easily used for emergency funds as well. When you get your travellers cheque's make sure that you sign all of them once, you will need to counter sign them when you cash them in and will need valid photo identification such as a passport. Also make sure that you make a note of all the serial numbers of your travellers cheque's and keep them separate. Your provider will be able to give you more information on how to keep them safe and using them whilst abroad.

If you are carrying large amounts of money then you should invest in a money belt which can be worn under clothes and is very inconspicuous. When getting your currency for aboard you should also ask for small denominates of notes, this will help to prevent you from getting shorted changed! It may also be a good idea to make yourself aware of the exchange rate so that you know how much things cost; tourist areas can often be overpriced! Never leave your wallet in your back pocket and put bags across both shoulders and carry them at the front this should deter muggers and pickpockets.

Most of these are things are common sense, by being careful and sensible we can enjoy our travels with ease!
