URINARY TRACT INFECTION - (D Mannose)

A Urinary Tract Infection or Cystitis is a condition suffered by millions of people throughout the world. It can vary from mild to chronic cystitis, once in a lifetime to a continual problem. Whenever it occurs however it can be distressing and embarrassing. These pages give you an insight into the problems and solutions, but also provide a simple answer to the most common form. This is the use of D Mannose.

D Mannose, when ingested goes directly to the urinary system and coats the inside walls, preventing bacteria from sticking to the walls of the bladder. The pictures you see here are of E.coli (Eschericia coli) bacteria. E.coli is commonly found in the human body, especially in the gut. It is by far the most common cause of urinary infections (85%+) in otherwise healthy people. Other bacteria can cause infections (proteus sp., streptococcus sp., staphylococcus sp., Klebsiella sp., pseudomonas sp. are examples). Some of these bacteria are more prevalent in chronic infections especially when contracted in hospitals (nosocomial) through catheterisation and through use of antibiotics.

We are concerned on this site with the majority of those infections that happen to you and I, either occasionally or with irritating regularity. These infections are acquired through the course of our normal lives and may be due to a number of reasons such as "Honeymoon Infections", poor hygiene conditions associated with a lowered resistance or those that recur for no apparent reason. Some people may have a physical disposition that may need investigating that leads to recurrent E.coli infections.

Those infections contracted in hospital will be treated accordingly by the doctors. Hospital acquired infections can be of more serious nature with multiple antibiotic resistance and should be monitored very closely.

We are also concerned with treatment of E.coli in the safest and least harmful way possible. Antibiotics have been a major asset to the world over the last 60 years and have saved millions of lives. Unfortunately they do have downsides which are explained in more detail here.
