Advice for Travellers
-
Rabies is considered low risk in terrestial animals originating in France. In 2008, the French Ministry of Agriculture declared that France lost its 'rabies free' status when an illegally imported rabid dog transmitted the rabies virus to two indigenous dogs. French officials have confirmed that there is a low but increased risk of rabies in three identified areas, Gers (south-west), Grandpuits in Ile-De-France and Calvados in Normandy (north-west).

No animal or bat bite should be ignored and immediate first-aid and cleansing of the wound is essential. Local medical advice should always be sought following any incident.
