How much vitamin D you need will depend on:
age, body weight, percent of body fat, latitude, skin colour,
season of the year, use of sunblock, individual variation
in sun exposure, and most likely your current state of
health.
As a general rule; you need more as you age, the larger
you are the more you need, northern latitude populations
need more than southern, dark skin needs more than fair,
indoor and winter favouring people need more than outdoor
summer people, excessive use of sun block makes Vit D levels
decrease and when ill your needs increase. Vitamin D is
used by the body, metabolically cleared, both to maintain
health and to treat disease. Infections demand more Vit
D, or illness persists, it seems that more Vit D is required,
but no one has a definitive answer about how much.
If you have regular sun exposure and sunbathe once a week,
year around, do nothing. If you use sunbeds once a week,
do nothing. However, if you have little UVB exposure, the
rule of thumb is: Healthy children under the age of two
should take 1,000 IU per day, over the age of two, 2,000
IU per day. Healthy adults and adolescent between 80 pounds
and 130 pounds should start with 3,000 IU per day, over
130 (35kg) pounds but less than 170 pounds (75kgL 4,000
IU per day and over 170 pounds (74kgL 5,000 IU per day.
- Rickets, a childhood disease characterized by impeded
growth, and deformity, of the long bones.
-Osteomalacia, a bone-thinning disorder that occurs exclusively
in adults and is characterised by proximal muscle weakness
and bone fragility.
-Osteoporosis, a condition characterized by reduced bone
mineral density and increased bone fragility.
Vitamin D malnutrition may also be linked to an increased
susceptibility to several chronic diseases such as high
blood pressure, tuberculosis, cancer, periodontal disease,
multiple sclerosis, chronic pain, depression, schizophrenia,
seasonal affective disorder and several autoimmune diseases.
